Radio Campus Grenoble : Spirit of 90.8

Board member of the International Association of Student Television And Radio (IASTAR France), Radio Campus Grenoble is a local French radio created in September 1992. IASTAR France assembles, leads and develops the national student radio network. Experiencing a freewill collaboration, each radio station in the federation remains locally its own leader. The « Radios Campus » can be found on the inner campus, or near the main student life spots. As FM radios, they broadcast their entire programs all over the city. Nowadays, more than 25 student radios exist in the major French cities and most of them can be listened to on the web.

As for the radio diffusion, Campus 90.8 broadcasting covers all the metropolitan area of Grenoble, which represents more than 450, 000 inhabitants. As for the association, the members of Radio Campus Grenoble, roughly 120 volunteers per year, are for the most part students, but it also welcomes professional people (artists, employees etc.) Thanks to this diversity, strong links have been built between the members, the community and different local, national and international role players (record industries, universities, cultural personalities, associations and public authorities).

It doesn’t only deal with student members and/or listeners. The associative, editorial and musical choices are intended to attract, whatever their age, people who can be described as socially, culturally and uninhibitedly open to cultural diversity. All the Radio Campus, as well as Campus Grenoble, are “radio pioneers”.

Their aim is to broadcast alternative information to the main networks. Involved in the non commercial area, the radio favours an encounter between young artists or private, engaged citizens and the most diverse crowd. Radio Campus Grenoble tries to build a new area where people can share knowledge and passion by pushing back common boarders.

Thereby, in the musical area, we play alternative music (from indie pop rock, to jazz, reggae, electronica, and experimental styles). It’s a place where creativity meets intelligence, politics and sensitivity without any economical consideration. “Let’s open our minds to what can touch us and not our pocketbooks.”

In the editorial field, we encourage cultural information stemming from students and all the role players involved in the life of our city and campuses. Thanks to our website and the radio streaming, we enlarge our information field to the world.

As we do not depend on any publicity or audience tolls, we can give time and space to our interviews. As an association, we raise funds from public authorities : le Fonds de soutien à l’expression radiophonique, le Conseil général de l’Isère and the four Universities of Grenoble.

ONE STATE of MIND : a network engaged with a gathering of curious people It’s a collective engagement which conveys a state of mind...how to be part of the city and the campus ?

ONE MOTIVATION : enlighten the completeness of individuals and groups The association wishes to improve listeners’ awareness, by going beyond a standardised and blended vision of the world.

TWO AMBITIONS : diversity and synergy. Radio and associative efforts strive to share knowledge and to cover culturally neglected fields. Those actions transcend the idea of “alternative media” as the ultimate goal, because if the developed actions are political ones by nature, they are not those of politicians.

ONE GOAL : improve critical minds. It is about offering the widest panel of thinking to the listeners, members of the radio, and the general public, pushing aside the internal affairs of the network universe, to be a space of “neutrality” and free thinking.
